Published Sports Photography Book | Episode 1: Takeo Spikes
In our first episode, Mike interviews former NFL linebacker Takeo Spikes as he talks about his journey from the football field to becoming a professional photographer. We take an in depth look at how he created his recently published photography book, “Behind the Mask,” his career transition into photography, and the value he has found in photography workshops!
So, how exactly does one go from football to photography? Throughout his football career Takeo realized that when you truly desire to be the best at something, you have to be disciplined, focused, and driven to strive for every learning opportunity in and around that field. Before Takeo retired, he saw that in order to truly pursue his lifelong passion and hobby at a higher level he needed to obtain higher level instruction. He saw the importance of photography workshops and how they can aid in accelerating your photography skills to the next level. So, a year before his retirement he started going to private photography lessons with Mike Moreland.
Taking his enhanced knowledge of photography, he decided to transition from one career to the next with a bang. A book that would effectively launch his newfound photography career. Takeo spent two years working on “Behind The Mask.” Traveling across the country with Mike, he designed this book to offer insightful depth into the lives of some of the greatest NFL linebackers of all time. It showcases unique, intimate images and original, never before published content. If you take a look at “Behind the Mask,” you will not only see photographs taken by Takeo, but also personal interviews. He has spoken with legends like Mike Singletary, Derrick Brooks, and the late Chuck Bednarik, which was his last interview. Takeo Spikes truly found a way to inspire the viewer as they enter the homes and lives of these great men through photography.
