About Creative Edge
Mike Moreland owner of Creative Edge Photography Workshops specializes in beginner, intermediate, advanced and private one on one Atlanta photography workshops. Mike has been an international award winning photographer for over 30 years. His passion is sharing his knowledge with others. He loves teaching customized photography workshops and classes and strongly believes in personal investment. If you are passionate about photography, taking a class is a great place to start. His wide range of experience photographing commercial and consumer assignment will help take your skills to the next level!
Traditional workshops typically feature a classroom setting or an instructor with minimal hands on learning experiences. Students often don’t get a chance to ask questions and experiment with their cameras while receiving one on one guidance from an experienced photographer. However, Creative Edge is different. Each workshop features multiple professional photographers ready to answer questions, demonstrate skills, and guide students. This provides an one on one feel that many other workshops fail to offer. Previous to the workshop itself, students will receive a 20 page eBook based on what they will be learning in the workshop, so there is no stress to take notes during the classroom setting that precedes each workshop. Students can then use this knowledge during the workshop and later on as they further their photography. The best part is the shooting part of the workshop!
Creative Edge’s workshops also feature real live models, rather than focusing on still objects. This allows students to get a feel for shooting people, moving objects, and offers a real life experience to the types of photography they hope to advance towards. This is the reason many of the students at Mike’s Creative Edge Photography Workshops often travel from out of state to attend. The models all sign a model release, so you can use the images in your portfolio which allows you are build your portfolio while you learn.
After each workshop, Mike creates an overview video and a critique video for each student after the workshop. This video incorporates images the instructors took, as well as images student can submit for constructive criticism. The photography workshops are at a variety of locations all over Atlanta.
Introduction Workshops
Creative Edge offers many different types of workshops, but the most popular are introduction, intermediate, specialty, and private coaching. Introduction Photography Workshops help get you started and on your feet. They start by teaching you the basics of the camera functions, then they get to the fun hands-on training part! After a small information session, the instructors will take you out on a photo safari for hands-on learning. They’ll answer all your questions as you start applying your new introduction photography knowledge in the field.
The goal for the intro workshop is to get you comfortable with you camera and shooting in manual mode. The first hour of this 3-hour workshop is going over those seemingly daunting camera settings you’ve heard about but don’t know how to use. The many instructors explain everything with visuals in an open question environment. A minimum of 3 professionals are within arm’s length to help you get your camera prepared for manual shooting. They like to make it as close to a one-on-one session as they can.
At the end of the lecture you roam the outdoor classroom, the beautiful, historic Barrington Hall, and turn words to action while photographing real models. The professionals will walk you through their camera’s manual settings and explain different types of lighting. This is a great opportunity to shoot as much as you want and explore your camera’s settings while having the guidance of professionals close by.
Intermediate Workshops
Creative Edge’s Intermediate Workshops are for students who are fairly comfortable getting a normal exposure in manual mode on their camera, but are still having trouble lighting your subjects, are struggling to create that professional look in their portraits, and/or are ready to invest in new equipment or lenses but don’t know what they need. Their goal for the Intermediate Workshop is to reacquaint you with your manual settings and then show you how to be creative and have control over your images to get your portraits to the professional looking level.
The first part of this three hour class is dedicated to showing you how we find, create or manipulate light. They also spend more time answering common questions about the benefits of different camera bodies, different lenses and using different camera settings. Most importantly, they want you to really put on your creative cap in Intermediate Photography Workshop and experiment with different depth of fields techniques, lenses and composition. The cool thing about this workshop is once the lecture is done, you start indoor shooting using window light.
Then you venture off property to a cool nearby location and experiment with natural and modified light. At least 3 professionals are within an arm’s length at all times to answer any questions or concerns you have about anything camera related!
Another feature to the Intermediate Photography Workshop is the 15 minute preview of Adobe Lightroom. Creative Edge uses Lightroom for the organization and bulk editing of our picture process. They want to show you how easy it makes post-processing! This is unique to their Intermediate Workshop. Let them show you the possibilities within Lightroom. Please be advised, this is just an introduction to Lightroom. For a full lesson in how to use it, try one of the custom one-on-one classes.
Specialty Workshops
If you already know how to use your camera, Creative Edge offers specialty, or advanced, photography workshops where they test your skills and introduce you to knew tricks and techniques. Each workshop is designed with you in mind. A little less structured than the Introduction Photography Workshop, students are able to take a little more freedom. The professional staff is always at arms reach, available to answer any questions! They have several options within their Specialty Photography Workshops.
